I Might Require an Allroad

The first gen Allroad has allured me for years, there’s just something about it that makes me want one. Maybe it’s the choice of a twin turbo V6 or a V8 and maybe it’s just that I’m a little bit crazy. Either way, I love the Allroad. Both generations.

It’s not helping my case that I spent some time behind the wheel of a 2015 Allroad a few months ago. Such a well sorted car that, very solid feeling and fun to drive.

So, here’s my list of why I do and don’t need a 1st gen Allroad.

+ Twin turbo 2.7 V6 engine

+ Or a 4.2 V8 engine

- You cannot have the 4.2 with manual.

+ Plastic bumpers are an upside for me, I street park and live in an urban area. Fuck street parking, hard.

+ Very wide array of options and accessories straight from the factory.

+ Adjustable air suspension makes it capable enough to take off the beaten track

+ Two tone leather interior

+ Optional solar sunroof which keeps the interior the same temperature as the outside or something fancy like that.

+ Still looks good for a 10+ year old car.

- Turbos might be a tad sketchy.

- Air suspension might be a little bit sketchy unless serviced.

+ Usable space of a wagon, utility of an SUV and driving dynamics of an S4. Like the nice lady who came up to my window on Main Street said; “I can be whatever you want me to be.”

+ Lots of storage and good towing capacity.

+ Some of you heathens dislike the Allroad and I feed upon your negativity.

So, does Oppo approve of my list?

The AllRoad is a sweet car and I've always had a thing for them. Never knew you could get the 2.7tt OR the 4.2 v8. I would personally take the 2.7tt and get some new turbos, maybe some coils to replace the air susp, put some big tires on and be done.

I remember how much I wanted one when new. Then a friend got one. He enjoyed it 4 out of 7 days a week for nearly 2 years. Finally traded away at a loss. Shame cause it was so stinking cool for those four days.

Edit: forgot that someone is now making total replacements for the airbag system that are much better than the stockers. Might have fixed his issues, which were almost all suspension related..except for all the climate control stuff that broke.

Apparently those were break in issues, likely sorted out over time. The only ones that won’t go away are turbo replacements, which I believe can be sorted out permanently by upgrading to k04 turbos rather than the stock and slightly more unreliable k03.

Really cool cars though.

I’ve driven an 2.7 before and it was a damn good time. Surprisingly fast for being a big ass station wagon!

The one time I drove it was one of the very few weeks that it wasn’t in the shop for some stupid little problem. Buyer beware. They’re terribly unreliable.

I know! It sounds weird but the B6 A4 has always been a car I really liked. When they first came out one of my neighbors got an S4 and I just thought it was the coolest thing ever. It was also one of the only manual cars on my street back then. Are the 1.8’s quirky? I know the 3.2 is a little more robust but not as mod friendly.

The B6 is a good generation, not my favorite but still a good one. Especially the Ultrasport models.

The 1.8’s are rather quirky in their own way, window regulators and coil packs were the main quirks with them. It’s a good engine and platform though, lots of room for upgraded turbos and performance mods. You can get one up to speed with an S4 for a reasonable cost.

The 3.0 was the other B6 engine, which I have absolutely no experience with whatsoever. The 3.2 in the B7 is a great engine though, again I have no direct experience but the stock exhaust note is great and they’re more or less 3/4ths of the 4.2 V8.

To that end, may I suggest this post . Where yours truly sees a beautiful Siberian tiger and tries to rationalize taking it home and training it to eat the next blonde magician it sees, but then realizes that it’s out of warranty and is much more likely to eat my wallet than Roy.

Let’s make a deal: you buy that imola S4 you posted earlier and I buy this A4 haha.

If I ever found a manual 3.2 A5 in a good color, I would trade one of the cars for it.. I've loved the A5 since they came out.
